Assertive Continuing Care for Adolescents (ACCA)

Program Overview

A Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) funded ACCA’s three-year project that will treat 150 adolescent ages 12 to 18 with substance abuse and co-occurring mental illness starting in July of 2007.  The program consists of 14 sessions in 12 weeks.  Services are delivered on an outpatient basis and include 4 individual sessions with the adolescent, 6 group sessions with peers, 2 sessions with at least one caregiver, and 2 sessions with the adolescent and caregiver(s) together.  The goals of the program are to enhance existing reinforces for staying abstinent and improving mental health by utilizing existing resources that are believed to support positive change, and develop a positive support system within the family. Eligible participants must meet the following qualifications:

  • Be between the ages of 12 and 18 years of age
  • Be diagnosed with a substance abuse or dependency disorder and have symptoms indicating the likely presence of a co-occurring mental health disorder
  • Completed primary treatment for a substance abuse disorder and/or co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorder
  • Be free of current medical or psychiatric symptoms that would preclude the ability to provide informed consent for treatment, informed assent for program evaluation or participation in an outpatient group oriented program
  • Have at least one caregiver who agrees to participate in the program
