Arapahoe House Hosts Adopt a Family for the Holidays

Children of parents recovering from alcohol or drug addiction are wondering if Santa will come this year.

Denver, CO -- Arapahoe House, Colorado’s leading nonprofit provider of drug and alcohol treatment, needs holiday gifts for children of single-parent clients healing from addiction.  Adopt a Family is a drive being held now through December 16.  The public is asked to shop from a gift list completed by low-income clients who will receive holiday gifts from donors to their children.

“Holidays are often difficult time for many people, but people in recovery from addiction face even more difficult challenges during the holidays,” said Arapahoe House CEO, David Murphy.  “The children suffer with their parents.  Adopt a Family was created to allow single-parents to bring holiday gifts and cheer to their children, who, for economic reasons, may otherwise have none.”

This year, Adopt a Family supporters are encouraged to bring their gifts and families to an open house event at the Children’s Museum of Denver on December 12, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.  Donors can drop off their Adopt a Family gifts, meet Arapahoe House client families, Santa, enjoy refreshments and complimentary admission to the museum.

The Adopt a Family program has been making a difference in the lives of Arapahoe House clients for more than 10 years.  Last year, Arapahoe House collected gifts for 125 families, providing holiday cheer to 396 children and their parents.

“The entire experience humbled me to the fact that there are good people, even great people out there,” said one Arapahoe House client about the 2008 Adopt a Family program.  “The fact that you can bring such great happiness to those in need that you don’t even know is eternally appreciated.”

A maximum dollar amount of $50.00 per family member is suggested.  Interested donors should contact the Arapahoe House development office at 303.412.3644 or e-mail development@ahinc.org.
