Vivitrol Providers – Medication Assisted Treatment

Vivitrol Providers | Medication Assisted TreatmentAt Arapahoe House, we know substance use disorders are a health issue and not a failure of willpower. As with most health problems, medications are typically administered to help one heal.

Medication assisted treatment (MAT) is an evidence based practice. A national group of addiction treatment specialists from NIAAA (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism) to SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) recommend MAT.

Medication assisted treatment increases overall results in helping individuals achieve long-term sobriety. However, MAT can never be used by itself; the individual must also be in outpatient or residential treatment. MAT is not a magic pill. Individuals recovering from addiction still have to work every day to maintain their sobriety.

Vivitrol is a newer treatment option in the fight against alcohol, heroin and prescription pain pill addiction:

  • It is the only once-monthly, non-addictive medication approved by the FDA to help with cravings and prevent relapse.
  • It is also unique in that it blocks the opioid receptors in the brain so individuals cannot get high while on it.
  • And, because it’s a monthly treatment, individuals do not have to make the daily decision about whether or not to take their medication.
